Patchwork Tails may look like a shop filled with cute bandanas, collars, and handmade pet accessories, but to me, it is about much more than fabric and thread.
It is about the animals who have found their way into my life over the years.
It is about the strays who needed food, shelter, kindness, and someone willing to stop and help.
And most of all, it is about a little orange tabby kitten named Nugget.
I’ve Been Rescuing Animals for as Long as I Can Remember
My love for animals started when I was a little girl. For as long as I can remember, I have had a soft spot for strays.
If an animal showed up hungry, scared, abandoned, or simply looking for someone to care, I wanted to help.
That hasn’t changed as I’ve gotten older.
Over the years, stray cats and other animals have continued to find their way into my life. Sometimes helping is as simple as putting out a bowl of food or providing a safe place to rest. Other times, an animal needs much more.
Anyone who has cared for stray animals knows how quickly the expenses can add up. Food, flea treatments, medications, vaccinations, spaying or neutering, and veterinary visits can become expensive—especially when you are helping more than one animal.
But it is hard for me to look the other way when an animal needs help.
They didn’t choose to be abandoned.
They didn’t choose to be hungry.
And they certainly didn’t choose to be sick.
Then There Was Nugget
One little kitten changed the way I looked at everything.

Her name was Nugget.
Nugget was a tiny orange tabby kitten we found when she was sick. Like so many of the strays that come into our lives, she needed someone to care about what happened to her.
We tried to help her. She had a severe respiratory infection with both eyes matted shut.
Unfortunately, Nugget didn’t make it. The respiratory infection had already turned septic.
Losing her was heartbreaking.
There is something especially difficult about losing such a tiny animal who barely had a chance to experience life. You start thinking about all the things that might have been different.
What if she had been found sooner?
What if there had been more we could have done?
What if there had been more resources available?
Those are questions that stay with you.
Nugget’s life may have been short, but she left a permanent mark on mine.
She also became part of the reason Patchwork Tails exists.
Turning Heartbreak Into Something Helpful
After losing Nugget, I knew I wanted to do more.
I can’t save every stray animal.
No one person can.
But I can help the ones who find their way to me.
That is one of the biggest goals behind Patchwork Tails.
I started Patchwork Tails because I love sewing and creating things for pets, but I also wanted the business to have a purpose beyond simply selling products.
Money earned through Patchwork Tails will help me provide food and veterinary care for the stray animals I take care of.
That might mean buying another bag of cat food.
It might mean paying for vaccinations.
It might mean helping cover the cost of medicine, an examination, or treatment for a sick animal.
Sometimes those things can make all the difference.
My hope is that Patchwork Tails will help give me the resources to act when another animal like Nugget needs help.
I never want to feel that I couldn’t do enough simply because the cost of helping was more than I could manage.
Every Purchase Has a Bigger Purpose
When you purchase something from Patchwork Tails, you are purchasing a handmade item that I created with care.
But you are also helping support something much bigger.
You are helping me continue caring for stray animals.
Some of the money generated by this business will go toward the food and veterinary expenses that come with helping them.
That makes every bandana, pet accessory, and future Patchwork Tails product especially meaningful to me.
A piece of fabric can become a bandana.
That bandana can become a sale.
And that sale can help fill a food bowl or contribute toward a veterinary bill.
That is the kind of business I want Patchwork Tails to become.
For Nugget—and for the Next One
I wish Nugget’s story had ended differently.
I wish I could tell you that the tiny orange kitten we found sick grew into a beautiful adult cat who spent years curled up somewhere warm and loved.
She deserved that life.
I can’t change what happened to Nugget.
But I can allow her story to change what happens next.
There will always be another stray who wanders onto a porch.
Another kitten who needs food.
Another frightened animal who needs someone to care.
And sometimes, another sick animal who needs a veterinarian.
Patchwork Tails is my way of combining two things I care deeply about: creating handmade products and helping animals.
My hope is that as Patchwork Tails grows, the amount of help I can provide will grow with it.
So when you see one of my handmade dog bandanas or another Patchwork Tails creation, know that there is a story stitched into it.
It is a story about a lifetime of loving animals.
It is a story about the strays who have found me over the years.
And it is a story about one little orange tabby kitten named Nugget who will always be part of the reason I keep trying to help the next one.
Patchwork Tails is for the pets we love, the strays still waiting for someone to care, and for Nugget.
I’d also recommend using a photo of Nugget, if you have one, near the Nugget section. That would make this one of the strongest trust-building posts on the Patchwork Tails website.
